We really didn't know who or what would be turning out for us on Saturday the 5th April, but when THEY turned up, good grief, even I felt young !!
We set off through the backs as soon as we could & sure enough they
didn't have the pace to match & I think the 1st try went to Chris
Golder on the left wing. He was only on for the 1st half but he scored
2 tries, so well done you.
The quality of ball coming back was inconsistent, but fair play to the
forwards, as there were some positional issues here. When it was good
( particularly from turnover ) it was very good & Alex once again
showed he has real ability to spot the opportunity to give it where it
can be used best, it being his play that led to the opening try. When
it was bad ( scrums & some line out ball ) it put Tidy at scrum 1/2
under enormous pressure & he did well to clear some of it. By the
way Tides, you really should listen to Rob Todd about what to do with
it when you are on your own goal line with a scrum going backwards. If
you had kicked infield or given it, we could have scored at the other
end !!
Hugh Wade -Jones & Richard Russ both had great games in the outside
centre role, with a 1/2 game each. Their pace & vision was just too
much for the opposition to cope with.
One to watch ? might be James, one of the real youngsters who came on
in place of Chris Golder. Gaps were created for him, but he did exceptionally
well & went for the finish on both occasions & earnt himself 2
well deserved tries
Frost also chipped in with 2 individual, jinky runs for a couple of tries.
I think jug evasion must have been the order of the day here as I know
other people scored tries, but nobody scored more than 2. End result was
67 - 14 & a big thank you to Shirley Wanderers for the game. It wasn't
meant to be like that, it just happened.
John on the flank... keep those lads interested, it was great to see them
get on for a 1/2 & get stuck straight in like seasoned vets. They
all, without fail, impressed & it will be good to see more of them.
