Park House 9 - Gillingham 13
Due to the very wet weather, the first team game against Gillingham Anchorians
(GA) was never going to be a high scoring affair.
It was Park House (PH) who put on the early pressure and were rewarded
with a six point lead after Richard Russ successfully slotted two penalty
kicks. For the next twenty or so minutes both teams had to defend their
lines. The only change in the score from then on was successfully taken
penalties from each side, although Richard Russ did hit the upright with
one attempt. The score at halftime was 9-3.
The first ten minutes of the second half were quite uneventful, but it
was GA who brought the game back to life. A deep kick by PH was collected
by the GA full back and then he gave a neat pass to the fly half who gave
a lovely pass inside to the winger at pace. With the PH cover pushing
the winger into the corner the try was scored. Unfortunately this was
unconverted but GA had closed the gap to bring the score to 9-8.
With many penalties going to both teams, the game was played very tightly
in the centre of the pitch. However, it was GA who were to strike again.
After collecting a good ball from his forwards, the GA flyhalf put in
a good cross field kick. The ball bounced up neatly into the wingers arms
and he finished the score off into the corner. The resulting conversion
was missed but GA were now ahead 9-13.
For the rest of the game PH attacked the GA line but it was only good
work from the GA forwards that stopped them from getting the try they
so desperately needed.
Final score Park House 9 Gillingham Anchorians 13.
